One Alternate Beneficiary, Distribution
Example
One Alternate Beneficiary
Shawn, Kelly, and Claudia are the primary beneficiaries of a $9,000
residuary estate. Bill is
the only alternate beneficiary. In
this situation, Bill receives all property intended for any deceased
primary beneficiary
because he is the only alternate beneficiary.
If Claudia does not survive, the $9,000 estate is distributed as follows:
Primary Beneficiaries
Shawn: $3,000
Kelly: $3,000
Claudia (deceased): $0
Alternate Beneficiaries
Bill: $3,000
Bill takes Claudia's full $3,000 share. Shawn and Kelly's shares are not
affected by Claudia's death.
Similarly, if both Kelly and Claudia are deceased, the $9,000 is
distributed:
Primary Beneficiaries
Shawn: $3,000
Kelly (deceased): $0
Claudia (deceased): $0
Alternate Beneficiaries
Bill: $6,000
In this example, Bill takes Claudia's full $3,000 share and Kelly's full
$3,000 share. Shawn's share is not affected by the death of Claudia or
Kelly.
