Common Law Marriage
A marriage that exists without government documentation, such as a marriage license.

Contrary to popular belief, a common law marriage is not formed in Pennsylvania by merely living together for a certain period of time. There are specifically defined circumstances and events that must be present to form a common law marriage.

Pennsylvania has abolished the formation of common law marriages after January 1, 2005.
