Inheritance Tax
A tax upon the value of all property transferred as the result of a person's death. The tax applies without regard to whether the property was transferred by a will or by other means, such as a right of survivorship.

The Pennsylvania inheritance tax uses different rates based upon the recipient's family relationship with the decedent, if any.

This method is different from the Federal estate tax, which is generally based upon the value of all property owned at death without regard to any recipient's family relationship, excepting only a marital relationship.
