Life Sustaining Treatment
Any medical procedure or intervention that, when administered to a principal who has an end-stage medical condition or is permanently unconscious, will only serve to prolong the process of dying or maintain the individual in a state of permanent unconsciousness.

Life sustaining medical treatment also includes nutrition and hydration administered by artificial or invasive means, but will only be withheld if the principal's Living Will gives specific instructions that it should be withheld.

Life sustaining treatment is also referred to by the phrase "Life prolonging procedures."
